In his meeting with Leggeri, Grande-Marlaska stressed the importance of working with the countries of origin and the transit of migratory flows to prevent and fight against mafias trafficking people. In this area, the minister expressed the need to further strengthen the operational capabilities of African countries.
In terms of the Agency's capabilities, Spain is providing candidates to fill categories 2 (operational staff on long-term secondment now in place) and 3 (operational staff for short-term deployments) of this permanent corps at the quota levels established in the new Frontex Regulation from 2019.
Grande-Marlaska thanked the European Border and Coast Guard for its support to Spain. Spain currently has three joint operations underway with Frontex led by the National Police or the Guardia Civil. Two of them (Indalo and the Canary Islands) have been active since the end of January (29.01.21) and the third (Minerva) will begin in June.
After the meeting held at the Ministry for Home Affairs, Grande-Marlaska and Leggeri will travel to Lisbon (Portugal), where on Tuesday they will attend a summit of European Union and African countries on managing migratory flows.
This morning, before his meeting with the minister, Leggeri visited the Police School in Avila, where all the European agency's staff are trained. He then met with the Director General of the National Police, Francisco Pardo.
On Wednesday, Leggeri will visit various National Police and Civil Guard sites in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and on Thursday 13th, he will hold a working meeting in Madrid with the Director General of the Guardia Civil, María Gámez.
