Challenges in the Sahel

Given the persistent threats to security and the complex socio-economic challenges in the Sahel region that call for urgent responses, Spain, France, Germany and Italy, in a joint statement, reiterate their commitment to stepping up support within the framework of a cross-cutting approach that involves security, governance, stability and development.

The fight against terrorism, illegal trafficking and all forms of violence are key objectives in guaranteeing the rule of law and peaceful co-existence in the Sahel. Accordingly, the four countries undertake to pursue with the existing initiatives to support the armies in the region, as well as the gendarmerie and the domestic security forces in their operations, training and strengthening of their capacities, particularly regarding respect for legal proceedings and human rights.

They are also convinced that, in order to guarantee a safe, stable and prosperous Sahel, it is not enough to only focus on security, which must be accompanied by humanitarian aid measures, stabilisation and economic and social development, particularly focusing on education, health and access to basic services for the whole population in ensuring territorial integrity.

They also express their intention to maintain joint efforts at close cooperation with the countries in the region and the G5 Sahel, within the framework of the Sahel Coalition, the Sahel Alliance, the Partnership for Security and Stability in the Sahel (P3S) and other regional initiatives to ensure that this region becomes a peaceful and stable zone in which terrorism and violence have no place.
