Recorded unemployment by the State Public Employment Service (Spanish acronym: SEPE) rose by 25,269 (up 0.66%) in November on the previous month.

Since records began in 1996, unemployment has risen on average in November by 34,000 people, while it rose by less this November.

The total number of recorded unemployed now stands at 3,851,312.

The seasonally-adjusted figure rose by 1,758 people.

Unemployment by sector

By economic sector, recorded unemployment fell in agriculture by 4,624 people (down 2.46%), in industry by 302 people (down 0.1%), while it rose in construction by 1,482 people (up 0.5%) and in services by 24,959 people (up 0.93%) and in Lastly, the number of first-time job-seekers rose by 3,754 (up 1.08%).

Unemployment by gender and age

In November, unemployment rose among men by 6,300 (up 0.39%) on the figure for October, to a total of 1,629,058.

Among women, unemployment rose by 18,969 (up 0.86%) to a total of 2,222,254.

Unemployment among young people under the age of 25 rose in November by 3,733 people (up 1.03%) on the previous month.

Unemployment by region

Recorded unemployment fell in three regions: the Basque Country (down 6,035), Castile-La Mancha (down 1,662) and Madrid (down 612).

It remained stable in the Region of Valencia, Catalonia and Andalusia and rose in the other regions, headed up by Galicia (up 6,165), the Canary Islands (up 5,832) and Castile and Leon (up 5,103).

Contracts

1,449,810 employment contracts were signed in November. This figure equates to 82.2% of the contracts signed in the same month of 2019, which shows a recovery in recruitment flows. Of these, 128,189 (8.84%) were permanent employment contracts.

Unemployment benefits in October

The total amount of benefits paid out by the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) in October 2020 stood at 2.65 billion euros, a figure that consolidates the path of a reduction in spending in recent months, since its peak in the month of May, at 5.48 billion euros.

The total amount of benefits paid out under Temporary Lay-off Plans (Spanish acronym: ERTEs) between April and October amounts to 13.39 billion euros.

The total number of beneficiaries at month-end was 2,553,677 people, up 35.9% on the same month last year.

The coverage of the unemployment protection system in October 2020 stood at 71.4%, while it stood at 62.4% under the same indictor in October 2019, a rise of 14.3%.
