#Biodirectos is a series of online meetings to be broadcast live and simultaneously on the various social media channels (Twitter, Facebook and YouTube) of the Biodiversity Foundation.

Organised by the ministerial department via the Biodiversity Foundation, these meetings seek to raise awareness about the important role played by biodiversity in terms of human health, as well as to discuss various topics related to the opportunities offered by a green reconstruction after the global crisis caused by COVID-19.

The campaign will consist of a series of meetings (a number of them attended by MITECO representatives) to be held over the course of the coming months.

Biodiversity: an ally in curbing pandemics

The first meeting, entitled "Biodiversity: an ally in curbing pandemics" will take place on 22 May to coincide with the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity. It will begin at 12:00 and last for one hour. The goal will be to foster debate on the effects of biodiversity loss and its ties to the appearance and spread of pandemics, such as the one we are experiencing at this time.

This first Biodirecto, to be moderated by the political scientist and sociology professor, Cristina Monge, will be attended by the Director-General for Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Jorge Marquínez. It will also be attended by Fernando Valladares, a scientist from the National Scientific Research Council (Spanish acronym: CSIC), and Julio Díaz, an expert at the National School of Health of the Carlos III Health Institute.

Possible solutions to the health and environmental crisis

This series of meetings will provide a platform for proven expert opinions in various fields aimed at finding solutions to the main challenges faced by society, the health and environmental crises. Subsequent events will focus on the opportunities offered by a green reconstruction, how to prevent future pandemics by strengthening controls on illegal animal trafficking, the importance of maintaining balance in the health of marine ecosystems and how the green entrepreneurship sector is tackling this crisis, with special focus on initiatives by the Emprendeverde Network.
