These awards seek to raise the profile of those emerging destinations that are being developed according to social, cultural and environmental sustainability principles.

The European Commission and the corresponding national tourism institutions decided to highlight "health and wellness tourism" for this ninth edition. The candidate destinations all presented projects that offer authentic tourism experiences managed in socially, culturally and environmentally sustainable ways, with this idea forming the basic principle.

After examining the candidates, the State Secretariat of Tourism decided that the winning destination would be "Valle del Ambroz, destino de Salud y Bienestar" ["Ambroz Valley, Health and Wellness Destination"], made up by the municipalities in Extremadura of Abadía, Aldeanueva del Camino, Baños de Montemayor, Casas del Monte, La Garganta, Gargantilla, Hervás and Segura de Toro.

Valle del Ambroz will receive the EDEN Award at a ceremony to be held in Madrid at Fitur. Subsequently, the destination in Extremadura will attend the European Award Ceremony Gala to be organised by the European Commission in Brussels in April 2020.
