Recorded unemployment falls by 54,683 in last 12 months and stands at lowest figure in November since 2008

The number of unemployed at the end of November rose by 20,525 on the previous month, at a very similar rate to the average rise in November over the last 10 years (20,477). Accordingly, total unemployment stands at 3,198,184, the lowest figure in a month of November since 2008.

In seasonally-adjusted terms, unemployment rose by 4,113 people.

Unemployment among men stands at 1,317,686, a rise of 13,549 (up 1.04%), while unemployment among women stands at 1,880,498, a rise of 6,976 (up 0.37%) on October. When compared with November 2018, unemployment among men has fallen by 25,255 (down 1.88%) and among women by 29,428 (down 1.54%).

Unemployment among young people under the age of 25 fell by 704 (down 0.26%) in November when compared with the previous month, while it rose by those over the age of 25 by 21,299 (up 0.73%).

Recorded unemployment fell on October 2019 in five autonomous regions and in the Autonomous City of Ceuta, principally in the Region of Valencia (down 3,807), Madrid (down 2,855), the Basque Country (down 1,564) and Castile-La Mancha (down 1,228). It rose in the remaining 12 regions, headed up by the Balearic Islands (up 11,557) and Andalusia (up 7,501).

By sector of economic activity, recorded unemployment fell on the previous month in the agricultural sector by 1,715 (down 1.15%), in the industrial sector by 607 (down 0.23%), while it rose in the construction sector by 1,738 (up 0.68%) and in the service sector by 23,934 (up 1.07%). Lastly, recorded unemployment fell among first-time job-seekers by 2,825 (down 1.04%).

Permanent employment

The total number of new employment contracts recorded in November amounted to 1,764,169. This represents a reduction of 100,003 (down 5.52%) on the same month of 2018. Of those, 171,612 were permanent contracts and 1,592,557 were temporary contracts.

The number of full-time permanent employments contracts recorded in November amounted to 101,384, with 70,228 part-time contracts.

Benefits

The coverage rate of the unemployment protection system in the month of October stood at 62.4%, 5.3 points up on the same month of 2018 (57.1%).

At the end of October, there were 1,879,345 beneficiaries of unemployment benefits, 6.96% fewer than in the same month last year.

The amount paid out in benefits totalled 1.64 billion euros, 14.5% more than in the same month last year.
