This Turkish military operation in northeast Syria:

  • Is having disastrous humanitarian consequences, adding to the extensive long suffering of the Syrian people:
  • Increases the already considerable number of refugees and displaced persons, while complicating humanitarian aid;
  • Endangers stability and security in the region;
  • Makes the political process more difficult which, within the framework of the United Nations, Spain has been supporting as the way to attain lasting peace in Syria;
  • Breathes new life into the terrorist group DAESH, endangering the advances made by the Global Coalition, that Spain is a member of and to which it is fully committed;
  • Endangers the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian State;

Turkey's legitimate security concerns should be addressed and resolved through politics and diplomacy, not through military action. Spain calls on the Government of Turkey to bring this military operation to an end.

In coordination with its European Union partners, Spain will refuse to grant new export licences for military equipment likely to be used in the operation in Syria.

The government states that the presence of Spanish troops in Turkey is framed within a NATO operation designed to contribute to peace and stability in the region.
