National Museum of Roman Art re-opens the Santa Clara Visigoth collection

The exhibition hall was closed on 22 March to avoid damage from falling material following the appearance of cracks in the dome of the church. Following the initial survey, the Ministry of Culture and Sport began works on 15 July works to shore up the dome and the dividing wall of the choir stalls.

The total investment amounted to 17,413 euros.

The church of the Convent of Santa Clara was the first site of the Archaeological Museum in Merida since its creation in 1838. After transferring the Roman collection to the new building in 1986, the church has been home to the standing Visigoth collection. The building was constructed between 1625 and 1675, with the classic layout of a Latin cross floor plan with a single nave and a dome standing over the crossing.
