Recorded unemployment falls by 123,588 year-on-year in July

The total number of recorded unemployed in July 2019 fell by 4,253 on the previous month. In relative terms, the unemployment rate fell by 0.14%. Accordingly, the total number of unemployed now stands at 3,011,433, the lowest figure since November 2008.

In seasonally-adjusted terms, unemployment fell in July by 2,915 people on the previous month.

Unemployment among men fell in July by 1,569 people and now stands at 1,216,487. Unemployment among women has fallen by 2,684 and now stands at 1,794,946 people. If we compare this with July 2018, unemployment among men has fallen by 63,092 and among women by 60,496.

Unemployment among young people under the age of 25 fell by 4,714 people in July on the previous month, while unemployment rose by 461 among those over the age of 25.

Recorded unemployment fell in all autonomous regions (except the Balearic Islands, where it increased by 0.7%) year-on-year, and also fell in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. There were noteworthy reductions in unemployment in Galicia (down by 7.64%), the Basque Country (6.59%), Murcia (5.43%) and Castile and Leon (5.22%).

By sector of economic activity, recorded unemployment fell in all sectors compared with the same month last year. It fell by 3,732 in Agriculture (down 2.44%); by 14,960 in Industry (down 5.48%), by 19,511 in Construction (down 7.23%); by 64,315 in Services (down 2.98%) and by 21,070 among first-time job-seekers, (down 7.42%).

Total number of contracts

A total of 2,179,527 contracts were signed in July. Of these, 185,713 were permanent employment contracts, 1,979,241 were temporary contracts and 14,573 were training contracts.

Of the permanent contracts signed in July, 111,191 were full time and 74,522 were part time.

Benefits

The coverage rate of the unemployment protection system in the month of June 2019 stood at 61.4%, 3.9 percentage points up on the same month of 2018.

There were 1,748,650 unemployment benefit recipients in June 2019, an increase of 2% on the same month last year.

The amount paid out in benefits in June 2019 totalled 1.43 billion euros, 8.4% more than in the same month of 2018.
