Josep Borrell attends swearing in of new President of Islamic Republic of Mauritania

During his meeting with the new president, the acting minister conveyed the importance to Spain of its relations with Mauritania, a friend of Spain's and a key partner in the strategic region of the Maghreb, with which we are bound by sound human, cultural and historical ties, and which constitutes a benchmark for stability in the region. Josep Borrell also declared Spain's support for the people of Mauritania in this new period of democratic consolidation.

He also expressed his gratitude for the model cooperation between the two countries on the issues of migration and security.

Following the ceremony, the acting minister visited the port of Nouadhibou, where he visited the Spanish security forces that have been deployed there for more than a decade.

The work of the Spanish forces on migratory control, made up of joint Guardia Civil maritime patrols and the joint investigation team of the National Police, has led to a drastic reduction in illegal migratory flows towards the coasts of the Canary Islands.
