At this time of pain, the government recalls his outstanding intellectual capacity, his humanistic profile and his efforts to strive for peace during his term of office as Head of State.
The government particularly wishes to underline the close ties between the former President and Spain, and his constant contribution to friendship between our two nations. In 1983, he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation for his participation in the Contadora Group for peace in Central America. He was also the President of the Carolina Foundation in Colombia. In 2007, he was awarded the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize. He was also awarded the Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic and the Grand Collar of Carlos III.
In ultimate recognition of his work to foster relations between the two countries, in 2012 the Govenrment of Spain granted him Spanish nationality by charter.
