The Ministry of Defence has also organised a series of activities around this event to be held over the next few days. Over 100 initiatives will be undertaken by the Spanish Army, the Spanish Navy, the Spanish Air Force, the Guardia Civil and the Royal Guard

These initiatives will culminate with a main event on the National Day of Spain (Thursday, 12 October) consisting of the traditional parade and fly-by which, this year, will take place on the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid and be presided over by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain.

All over Spain

The Armed Forces have already begun celebrating events this week at a local level. The schedule includes various activities ranging from open days at barracks, ships and air bases to pledges of allegiance by civilian personnel, as well as conferences, exhibitions, concerts by military bands and even public races.

These activities will take place all over the country. Andalusia is the autonomous region with the most events planned; close on 40 events taking place throughout the eight provinces that include sea baptisms to be organised by the Spanish Navy in the province of Cadiz and demonstrations by the Brigade of the Spanish Legion in various towns around Almeria.

National Day of Spain

The National Day of Spain was established in 1987 under Law 18/1987. This law states "its purpose is to solemnly remember moments from our collective history that form part of our shared historic, cultural and social heritage, embraced as such by the vast majority of citizens".

The law also refers to the chosen date: "The 12th of October symbolises the historic events following which Spain, on the verge of concluding a State-building process based on our cultural and political plurality, and integration of the Kingdoms of Spain under a single Monarchy, is embarking on a period of linguistic and cultural projection beyond the frontiers of Europe".
