Among the Spanish priorities for the Security Council are to contribute effectively to the maintenance of international peace and security; disarmament and non-proliferation; the fight against terrorism in all its forms, giving a voice to its victims; the promotion of human rights, gender equality and the encouragement of women's full participation in peacebuilding; strengthening preventive diplomacy; the Council's focus on development cooperation as a key element of international peace and security; and new global challenges such as climate change, cybersecurity and cross-border organised crime.

Along with this, Spain will work to resolve the numerous conflicts that are on the Council's agenda. It will do so from its position as a country committed to fair and lasting solutions, one which maintains constructive relations with almost all the countries in the world, and whose geographical and strategic position underpins its commitment to build bridges and find consensus.

In its two years as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Spain will hold the chair of three of its committees of enormous importance for the maintenance of international peace and security: the 1540 Committee on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; the 1718 Committee on sanctions on North Korea; and the 1737 Committee on sanctions on Iran.
During this stage, Spain will promote transparency, dialogue and open debates that achieve the broadest possible consensus and the most generally representative decisions possible, aimed at achieving a more just and therefore safer world.
