Luis Planas analyses agreement reached between European Union and United Kingdom with representatives from fisheries sector

The minister recalled that as from 1 January 2021, the United Kingdom will be a third country and will recover sovereignty over its waters and control of its own fishing resources.
Luis Planas specified that Spanish vessels will continue with their activity in British waters under similar conditions to those at present until the end of the five and a half-year transition period on 30 June 2026.
The agreement does not affect the most important species for the activity of Spanish vessels, such as mackerel, horse mackerel and blue whiting, nor deep-water species, such as bream, alfonsinos, black scabbardfish and grenadiers.
Furthermore, in the case of a species of great interest for the Spanish fleet like northern hake, the reduction in the quota is gradual and limited, to amount to up to 1% by 2026.
The meeting involved the participation of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (Spanish acronym: Cepesca), the National Federation of Fishermen's Guilds, Celeiro Port and the National Association of Cod Fishing Ship Owners.
