Pedro Sánchez asserted that "we as a country cannot accept that what is going to happen in the future regarding Gibraltar depends on negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union; this must be something defined and agreed upon between the United Kingdom and Spain". Pedro Sánchez made this statement at the Spain Summit 2018, the traditional meeting organised by The Economist, which every year gathers together political leaders, business leaders, investors, innovators, academics and analysts to review the political, social and economic situation in Spain.

In this year's edition, which also included the participation of the Ministers for Economy and Business, Nadia Calviño, and for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, Pedro Sánchez reiterated the government's intention to remain in power in order to offer stability to the country, the need to recover co-existence in Catalonia as well as the need to renew the constitutional pact, among other current affairs.
