"Dear Prime Minister,

I received the news of the terrible fire in the region of Pedrógão Grande with dismay and great sadness. A high number of people were killed in the fire, while many others were injured.

I wish to pass on, at this painful time, the solidarity and condolences of the people and Government of Spain over those people who died, which I would ask that you convey to their families and friends, as well as our best wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured.

Spain, your neighbour and sister nation, stands ready to cooperate with Portugal in the work to put out the blaze, as well as to provide support to the civil protection authorities.

Have no doubt that Portugal can count on Spain for all that it should need at this difficult time.

Please accept, Mr Prime Minister, my warm regards and deepest personal respect".

Mariano Rajoy Brey
President of the Government of Spain
