The Heads of State and Government will spend the two days analysing the current strategic situation, framed by the termination of the mission in Afghanistan and the growing instability in Eastern and Southern Europe, which require renewed attention in terms of defence issues. This analysis seeks to define the new challenges and threats facing us and the way in which NATO must tackle them.

This Summit will also tackle the conclusion of the mission of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan following 12 years on the ground in the largest operation in the history of NATO. It will also be used to define the new NATO mission to train and advise the Afghan armed forces as from January 2015.

The Summit will also provide an opportunity for the allies to declare their support for Ukraine and their solidarity with its allies that are closest to this crisis in Eastern Europe.

Another of the major debates in Wales will be the plans and initiatives aimed at improving the preparation of the NATO forces and their capacity to jointly operate among the 28 allies and other partners.

Finally, the Wales Summit will serve as an opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Transatlantic Link, together with the commitment of the 28 allies to joint defence.
