Number of contributors to Spanish social security system rises by 637,232 on last year, second highest figure on record

The number of female contributors to the social security system now amounts to 8,521,826 workers, representing 46.27% of all workers.

The seasonally-adjusted figure, which allows the underlying trends to be tracked in the number of contributors, grew in the month by 43,437 workers.

Monthly change

The General Regime posted a decline of 4,855 contributors (down 0.03%), to stand at 15,139,984. In absolute terms, the number of contributors rose in education (up 28,400), trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorbikes (up 18,874) and in construction (up 15,846).

The Special System for Agricultural Workers posted a rise of 10,065 contributors (up 1.33%). The sector now has an average total of 765,898 contributors. In turn, the Special System for Domestic Workers rose by 932 (up 0.22%) to stand at a total of 420,999 workers.

3,210,880 contributors were registered under the Regime for Self-Employed Workers, following a decline of 7,022 people (down 0.22%) in the last month. A decline of 841 contributors was posted in the Special Regime for Seamen (down 1.29%), to a total of 64,468 workers. Finally, the Regime for Coal Workers posted a decline of 55 contributors (down 2.21%) to a total of 2,424 workers.

In terms of autonomous regions, the number of National Insurance contributors rose in November in Madrid (up 28,387), the Region of Valencia (21,324), Andalusia (11,786), the Canary Islands (5,157), the Region of Murcia (4,968), the Basque Country (3,846), Castile-La Mancha (2,217), Melilla (1,004), Navarre (247), La Rioja (78) and Ceuta (38).

In contrast, November posted declines in the Balearic Islands (down 78,975), Castile and Leon (5,833), Catalonia (4,038), Cantabria (876), Galicia (747) Aragon (87), Extremadura (511), and Asturias (259).

Comparison with 2016

In year-on-year terms, November closed with an average of 637,232 more contributors (up 3.58%) which, together with last year's result, is the best on record since 2005. Specifically, the General Regime posted buoyant results, with a rise of 620,189 contributors, up 4.27%. This rise stands at 4.7% when looking at the General Regime in a strict sense (discounting the Special Systems for Agricultural Workers and Domestic Workers).

It should be noted that the rate rose by 0.53% under the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers, which translates into an increase of 16,986 workers. The Regime for Seamen rose by 0.6% (up 385), while the Regime for Coal Workers posted a decline of 328 contributors (down 11.92%).

Compared with last year, the number of workers has increased in all autonomous regions, with particularly noteworthy figures in Madrid (up 121,729), Catalonia (up 115,288) and Andalusia (up 110,779).
