The most recent of these attacks killed dozens of people, including many children. The use of chemical weapons is prohibited under international law and constitutes a war crime, those responsible for which must be brought to justice.

The US operation is a limited action in scope and measure. It was an attack against a military base, not against civilian targets. It was aimed at depleting the regime's military capacity to use this type of weapon against its population again.

The Government of Spain, which remains firmly loyal to its allies, agrees with concerted international action. Hence, it regrets that the United Nations Security Council stalemate in the Syrian conflict has not made that possible.

Spain calls for a political transition process to be launched as soon as possible, as contained in the Security Council resolutions. This is the only formula that can bring lasting peace to Syria and guarantee its territorial integrity. It is a process that should be headed up by the United Nations.
