General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean

The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean is a regional fisheries organisation under the umbrella of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Its main aim is to guarantee the conservation and sustainable use, at a biological, social, economic and environmental level of live marine resources, together with the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean and in the Black Sea.

For its part, the Aquaculture Committee has extensive work experience as a forum for coordinating this activity within the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean. Specifically, it is tasked with providing technical advice to the Commission and with fostering the sustainable development and responsible management of marine, brackish water and land aquaculture in the sphere of application of this organisation.

Each day, aquaculture takes on greater importance at a global level as a source of fish proteins. At present, it represents more than 50% of all aquatic products consumed around the world.
