Average number of foreign citizens registered with Spanish Social Security system stands at 1,687,585 in January

The year-on-year rate of foreign workers rose by 5.42%, representing 86,763 more workers than in January 2016.

The highest figures for foreign workers contributing to the Social Security system correspond to Romania (304,590), Morocco (215,366), China (95,782), Italy (83,377) and Ecuador (65,702). These countries are followed by the United Kingdom (58,951), Bulgaria (52,942), Colombia (49,218), and Bolivia (47,771).

Autonomous regions

In month-on-month terms, the number of foreign National Insurance contributors fell in all autonomous regions and cities, except in Andalusia, where it rose by 0.38%.

The figures posted for January show that 978,794 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, while the remaining 708,791 are from EU countries.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,406,595 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (214,719) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (185,719). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (277,304), the Special Regime for Seamen (3,519) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (166).

Of the total foreign citizens in the system in January, 945,462 are men and 742,123 are women.
