The Government of Spain congratulates the Government of Colombia and expresses its deep satisfaction at this announcement. This agreement represents a major step towards achieving stable and lasting peace in Colombia and is excellent news for Ibero-America and for the international community as a whole. Spain supports the efforts of the peace negotiators and expresses its hope that the definitive peace agreement will be concluded shortly.

Verification of the strict respect for and compliance with the measures to end the conflict will be overseen by a Special Political Mission established by the Security Council, in which Spain will take part in line with the request from the United Nations, contributing its experience in other peace processes in the region and also contributing towards the mission having an appropriate gender balance.

The Government of Spain has offered its resolute support during the whole peace process, both at a bilateral level and through the European Union institutions, and on the United Nations Security Council through the backing for and negotiation of Resolution 2261(2016), which was unanimously adopted. Spain will continue to stand on the side of the people of Colombia so that the benefits of peace can be felt by the whole population during the post-conflict period, which we will contribute to through Spanish Cooperation, the EU Trust Fund for Colombia and in ensuring that Colombia is free of mines by 2021.
