The first case is of a patient, who has now died, who was cared for in a hospital in the Region of Madrid. The second case is a female nurse from the intensive care unit that attended the first patient.
The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality is collaborating with the Region of Madrid in all aspects of this case. Furthermore, the ministerial department has activated the protocol established by the National Network of Epidemiological Surveillance and the coordination mechanisms with all of the other autonomous regions.
The Crimean-Congo virus belongs to the Bunyaviridae family and causes Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. This virus has a natural cycle in ticks that act as vectors and are mainly found in wild and pet ruminants. The disease is endemic in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and Asia.
