Number of National Insurance contributors rises by 158,038 in April

The increase in contributors this month is among the highest since records began, second only to April 2015.

In year-on-year terms, the system has 455,540 additional contributors, up 2.68%.

The General Regime posted a rise of 142,642 contributors (up 1.01%), to stand at 14,212,846. Noteworthy rises in the number of contributors were seen in April in the Hotel and Catering industry, up 58,192, or 5.37%, in Administrative Activities and Auxiliary Services, up 16,550, or 1.46%, in Manufacturing Industry, up 9,589, or 0.57% and in Trade, up 9,367, or 0.42%.

The Special System for Agricultural Workers enjoyed growth of 1,025 contributors (up 1.46%), which was affected by the definitive closure of the olive campaign, to stand at an average of 768,683 workers. In turn, the Special System for Domestic Workers rose by 888 contributors (up 0.21%) to stand at a total of 432,302 workers.

3,184,134 contributors were registered under the Regime for Self-Employed Workers, following a rise of 14,839 (up 0.47%). An increase of 689 contributors was posted in the Special Regime for Seamen (up 1.1%), to a total of 63,515 workers. Finally, the Regime for Coal Workers posted a decline of 133 contributors (down 3.82%).

Affiliation to the Social Security system in April rose in all autonomous regions, except in the Autonomous City of Ceuta, headed up, in absolute terms, by the Balearic Islands (up 34,764), Andalusia (up 34,120), Catalonia (up 31,191), the Region of Madrid (up 15,304) and the Region of Murcia (up 10,229).

Comparison with 2015

In year-on-year terms, April closed with an average of 455,540 more contributors (up 2.68%), due, to a great extent, to the good results posted by the General Regime, with 420,996 new workers (up 3.05%).

It should be noted that the rate rose by 1.03% under the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers, which translates into an increase of 32,541 workers. The Regime for Seamen rose by 4.13% (up 2,521), while the Regime for Coal Workers posted a decrease of 519 contributors (down 13.44%).

Compared with last year, the number of workers has increased in all autonomous regions, except Cantabria. Particularly noteworthy are Catalonia, with an increase of 109,627 workers (3.64%), the Region of Madrid, with an increase of 99,288 workers (up 3.57%), the Region of Valencia, with an increase of 58,478 (up 3.57%) and Andalusia, with an increase of 33,003 (up 1.17%).
