The tribute included the presence of the Ambassador of Spain to Bosnia-Herzegovina, María Aurora Mejía Errasquín, the Mayor of Mostar, Ljubo Beslic and Brigadier General Amador Enseñat, who acted as the Technical Secretary-General of the Training and Doctrine Command of the Spanish Army.

The Spanish military personnel laid a floral wreath on the monument erected in Plaza de España in Mostar in memory of the 23 Spanish soldiers who died on the various peacekeeping missions carried out in this region.

Since the arrival of the first Spanish contingent to the region in October 1992, Spanish soldiers have operated under the orders of the United Nations, NATO and the European Union, carrying out their various missions with the aim of avoiding confrontations between the three groups present in the region and, following on from that, to stabilising the situation through the creation of a secure framework to allow for the social peace necessary for the stable economic development of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The number of Spanish military personnel who have served in Bosnia exceeds 46,000, made up of members of the Army, Air Force and Marines who have deployed detachments in their respective areas of responsibility, mainly located in the south of the country. In addition to the various missions entrusted by international bodies from time to time, the Spanish Armed Forces have maintained a strong commitment to attending to the most needy and providing humanitarian support for civil society.

The Embedded Advisory Team (EAT) mission that concluded on Wednesday, was carried out through nine rotations over the last four and a half years, and consisted of advising the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in order to attain the necessary inter-operability and standardisations with NATO and the European Union.

Spain, however, will continue to maintain military representation in Bosnia through its participation in the General Headquarters of EUFOR deployed in Sarajevo
