A dozen members of the Special Naval War Force of the Spanish Navy have travelled to Praia, the capital of the African country, under the command of a Marine Infantry Commander.

The aim of the presence of these military personnel in Cape Verde, where they are initially due to remain for two months, is to cooperate in setting up and training a special operations unit of the Cape Verde armed forces.

The Spanish Minister for Defence, Pedro Morenés, who has visited Cape Verde on two occasions, highlighted in his appearance before the Defence Committee of the Lower House of Parliament on 9 July, that " for Spain - as a neighbour of Africa, concerned with its development - it is fundamental to be involved in the region at all levels: political, institutional, on matters of trade investment and, undoubtedly, in relation to security, in order to help foresee, analyse, prevent and contain risks before they turn into threats".
