The meeting served as a follow-up to the visit made by the Spanish minister in April to the United Arab Emirates accompanying His Majesty, King Juan Carlos.

Railway infrastructure

The United Arab Emirates is planning to create a goods and passenger railway infrastructure with an extension of some 1,200 kilometres, which will partly fall under the so-called Gulf Railway. Moreover, the construction of a high-speed railway line between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is planned as part of this network.

In this regard, the minister underlined that Spain has leading international companies in consultancy, engineering, construction, rolling stock and signalling, as well as sound experience acquired over recent decades.

Urban transport

The urban transport system in Abu Dhabi (metro and light railway) is still at the planning stage. Several Spanish companies are already taking part in these projects and, moreover, the public company Ineco, together with Metro de Madrid, have expressed their interest in participating in developing the future metro network.

Airports and ports

In terms of airport infrastructures, the minister highlighted at the meeting that in April, the successful bidders Ineco, together with AENA, were adjudicated the project for the start-up of the Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) at Abu Dhabi Airport.

Finally, the Minister for Public Works took the opportunity offered by the meeting to invite the minister to visit Spain, together with a larger delegation, in order to see the Spanish infrastructures first hand.
