At the meeting, held at Stoltenberg's request, the two discussed the AUKUS strategic cooperation agreement reached between the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, and its possible impact on the Atlantic Alliance.

The President of the Government of Spain stressed the importance of re-establishing trust between allies and offered his support and willingness to the NATO Secretary General to help overcome this disagreement between the United States and France; two historic allies and pillars of the Atlantic Alliance.

Sánchez and Stoltenberg also discussed the opportunity presented by the strategic concept review, as well as the NATO 2030 initiative to explore avenues of complementarity and connections between the Euro-Atlantic area and the Asia-Pacific region, where there are several challenges to global stability.

Both documents, the new Atlantic Alliance Strategic Concept and the NATO 2030 initiative, constitute the roadmap for the Atlantic Alliance summit to be held in Spain in 2022, an event that will be key to the future of the organisation.
