Costa Rica was one of the participants at the virtual summit held on 24 June under the initiative "Together for a response for Latin America and the Caribbean to combat COVID-19", backed by Spain and designed to improve access to financing by medium-income countries, particularly those in Latin America and the Caribbean.

President Alvarado underlined his satisfaction at this initiative, given that it is in line with the call made by international financial institutions for implementing "exceptional and historic" measures that allow the pandemic to be dealt with. Both governments share a commitment to the fight against climate change, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Pedro Sánchez took the opportunity to congratulate Carlos Alvarado on Costa Rica's upcoming membership of the OECD.
