During their meeting, Pedro Sánchez and Sebastian Kurz discussed the priorities of the Austrian Presidency of the EU and one of the focal issues of the meeting of European leaders in Salzburg, namely migration. They particularly exchanged points of view on border control and measures to strengthen the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX). President of the Government Sánchez stressed that the challenge of migration is a global issue that requires a European response based on solidarity, responsibility and cooperation between all Member States.

The two leaders agreed on the need to step up support and cooperation with countries of origin and transit, particularly with Morocco, as well as strengthening relations between the EU and Africa, through a European strategy for the sustainable development of the continent that fosters economic and social growth in African States.

The President of the Government and the German Chancellor also spent time looking at the Brexit negotiations and other issues of common European interest such as the social dimension of the reform of the Euro and the new multiannual financial framework 2021-2027.

Following his visit to Spain, the Austrian Chancellor will travel on Sunday to Paris to meet with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and then on to Berlin to meet with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, on the eve of the informal meeting of Heads of State and Government in Salzburg.
