Ministry of Tourism launches National Xacobeo Plan 2021-2022

For the minister, Reyes Maroto, this project, which was initiated on Thursday, "seeks to enhance the development and consolidation of the Xacobeo tourism product from a perspective of sustainability, inclusion, digitalisation, quality and safety; in short, a commitment to the tourism model we want for the future. This Plan is also a unique product that strengthens our image as an international tourism destination". According to the minister, this project "unites territories and people who will be connected by a unique personal re-encounter experience and also by the diverse wealth of the heritage, history and culture of our country".

The meeting, chaired by the minister, was also attended by the State Secretary for Tourism, Fernando Valdés, with the presence by video-conference of the tourism representatives of the autonomous regions. It also involved the participation of Xose Manuel Santos Solla, Chair of the Department of Geography and Territorial Organisation of the University of Santiago, who made a presentation on the importance of St James's Way for tourism and as a spiritual source for many believers.

The minister explained the main actions under the Plan, such as the refurbishment of historical heritage property for tourism purposes to make them sustainable; actions on the tourism sustainability of destinations; measures to foster and prioritise plans at destinations that form part of St James's Way. In addition, the model of the network of smart tourism destinations will be extended and actions will be carried out to promote Xacobeo 2021-2022 both at a national and an international level.

Lastly, Reyes Maroto explained that collaboration agreements will be entered into with public and private institutions to support the projects that contribute to the development of tourism products and the commemoration of the Xacobeo year.
