Average of 2,145,263 foreign citizens contributing to Spanish Social Security system in September

12,356 more foreign contributors were posted in September, a rise of 0.58% compared with August.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,796,488 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (205,355) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (167,377). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (343,658), the Special Regime for Seamen (5,065) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (51).

Of the total number of foreign workers contributing to the Spanish Social Security system in September 2019, 870,091 are from EU countries while 1,275,172 are from further afield. Of the total figure, 1,199,718 are men and 945,545 are women.

The largest groups of foreign workers paying in to our Social Security system come from Romania (345,906), Morocco (251,533), Italy (132,738) and China (107,473). These countries are followed by Colombia (77,236), Ecuador (75,665), the United Kingdom (68,963), Bulgaria (61,567), Venezuela (61,392) and Portugal (57,331).

Autonomous regions

In year-on-year terms, the number of foreign contributors rose in all the autonomous regions. In this regard, La Rioja (up 11.27%), Extremadura (up 10.79%), the Basque Country (up 10.32%) and Galicia (up 10.23%) are the regions with the largest rises in foreign workers over the last year, followed by Navarre (up 9.27%), Castile and Leon (up 8.66%) and Catalonia (up 8.31%).

The largest rises in contributor numbers over the last month were recorded in Extremadura (up 11.62%), La Rioja (up 9.77%) and Castile-La Mancha (up 8.54%). They also rose in Navarre (up 3.24%), Andalusia (up 2.69%), the Basque Country (up 2.05%), Castile and Leon (up 1.34%), Madrid (up 1.24%), the Canary Islands (up 0.47%) and Galicia (up 0.23%).

In September, contributor number fell in Cantabria (down 4.38%), Asturias (down 3.01%), the Balearic Islands (down 2.91%), Aragon (down 2.8%), Catalonia (down 0.76%), Murcia (down 0.4%) and the Region of Valencia (down 0.03).
