This plan is framed within the Turespaña strategy aimed at improving the profitability of international tourism, and hence particularly focuses on attracting two specific segments of high profit consumer: travellers with greater purchasing power from European markets and tourists from distant markets.

The State Secretary for Tourism, Isabel Oliver, considers it "essential to promote our country, particularly in distant markets such as Asia and the United States, which are a priority for us. The trade fair plan 2020 will help us enhance the fame of the Spain Brand and attract new segments of demand that contribute to increasing profit in the sector".

Noteworthy among the goals sought under the trade fair plan 2020 are the consolidation of the presence in non-EU markets to which end Turespaña will participate in 18 trade fairs in Asia and America (41% of the total), as well as in specialised trade fairs, principally the MICE and luxury segments (eight scheduled).

26 trade fairs are scheduled for the European markets, 10 fewer than this year, since, given their nature as mature markets, the decision was taken to opt for stepping up efforts in more relevant trade fairs and with a greater presence of co-exhibitors.

Turespaña will take part in 32 general trade fairs in 2020, including those of greatest significance, such as Fitur in Spain, ITB in Berlin, WTM in London, MITT in Moscow, ITB China in Shanghai and Salon Mondial du Tourisme in Paris.
