The Government of Spain expressed its satisfaction at the approval of the mandate to negotiate future relations between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom.

Once again, the unity of the 27 has been maintained with a view to the new and important phase that now begins. This new mandate is sufficiently sound, balanced and extensive to allow the Chief Negotiator, Michel Barnier, and his team, the margin necessary to achieve the desired goals.

The Government of Spain will defend Spain's interests and those of the EU in these negotiations with a desire for these to lead to a profound and ambitious future relationship with the United Kingdom to the benefit of European citizens and companies.

Lastly, Spain reiterates the importance of guaranteeing the effective application of the provision of the Withdrawal Agreement on the matter of citizens' rights.
