Pedro Sánchez will promote a European and supportive response to the migratory challenge in Salzburg

During the informal meeting of EU leaders, the President of the Govenrment will convey to all his EU partners his wish to unite efforts and offer European responses to the migratory challenge, based on solidarity, responsibility and cooperation among all Member States. In particular, President of the Govenrment Sánchez will propose the creation of a supportive European model to manage migratory flows. In this regard, he will share the need to step up support and cooperation with countries of origin and transit, as well as to strengthen relations between the EU and Africa.

The meeting of European leaders will also give a chance to exchange impressions with Michel Barnier, the European Union's Chief Negotiator on Brexit, and to discuss future relations with the United Kingdom.

This meeting comes two days after the meeting between the President of the Government and Michel Barnier at Moncloa Palace where the EU's Chief Negotiator expressed his full support for Spain in negotiations with the United Kingdom on Gibraltar. They also both expressed their confidence in maintaining the current schedule for an agreement on Brexit.

Internal security

Another of the items for debate will be the need to step up efforts to improve police, judicial and intelligence cooperation.

During the meeting, European leaders will seek to improve the interoperability of the different data bases and information sharing, a key aspect in the fight against terrorism, where the threat remains immediate and cross-border in many cases. The President of the Govenrment will back strengthening the figure of the European Prosecution Service and the creation of a comprehensive civil protection system.
