Telegram from Mariano Rajoy to the widow of José Manuel Maza, Chief Public Prosecutor

"After hearing the sad news of the death of the Chief Public Prosecutor, José Manuel Maza, I wanted, in my own name and on behalf of the government, to express our deepest sympathies and affection to all his family and friends.

His death not only means the loss of an extraordinary Chief Public Prosecutor, but also of a leading jurist and public servant who devoted his life to the service of our justice system.

During his long and brilliant career, particularly as a judge in the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court, he left his mark in terms of independence and his calm doctrinal rigour, virtues that he also shone through in his mandate as Chief Public Prosecutor, with his professional commitment and in defence of the rule of law.

With all our recognition and gratitude, rest in peace".

Mariano Rajoy Brey
President of the Government
