Mariano Rajoy believes that one month should be sufficient time to forge "a minimum agreement" capable of forming a government because "it makes no sense" to be "wasting our time" for another period of several months. "I would like us to be able to do something sensible and reasonable within a month", he said.

Agreement for a sufficient majority

In this regard, the President of the Government said that "I will do everything in my power" to not only be re-elected but to also come up with "some sort of government formula with sufficient majority" to approve fundamental laws, such as the 2017 Budget and "the laws we have ahead of us".

To obtain that goal, Mariano Rajoy will speak "with all the political forces, firstly with PSOE, which continues to be the second-strongest political force in our country". The reason for this decision, he explained, is because "we need" that party on "the fundamental issues".

Reform of the Spanish Constitution

He went on to add that "a national agreement" is necessary on certain issues. "There are some important European issues that need to be dealt with; dealing with the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union is not something that can be done at the drop of a hat", he said.

When asked about a possible reform of the Spanish Constitution, Mariano Rajoy explained that he would be willing to speak "about specific reforms" because "we need to know just exactly what we intend to do".
