Mariano Rajoy believes that the people of Spain asked for "change and agreement" on 20 December and that this requires "the major national parties to understand one another"; something that is "normal" in Europe but has never happened before in Spain. That, he added, "would provide much-needed stability and calm in our country".

In this regard, Mariano Rajoy backed the formation of a stable government with sufficient majority based on the fundamental issues: "National unity, the quality of all Spaniards, national sovereignty, the fight against terrorism and our membership of the European Union and the Euro".

The President of the Government also insisted on the need to maintain the reforms already in place and that have been "useful" because the main objectives continue to be job creation and economic recovery.
