The aim of the Bratislava Summit, called following the negative result of the referendum on the United Kingdom remaining in the EU, held on 23 June, is to stress the commitment of the other 27 countries to the European integration process and to initiate a process not only to reflect on the future of the EU, but also to take action. The goal is to show, through decisions and actions, that the EU acts effectively in resolving the main concerns of the citizens of the European Union.

From this perspective, President Tusk proposes to organise the work in this process around the issue of security. In this regard, concrete measures are due to be adopted in the coming months in relation to the different policies of the EU on security in all its aspects: internal security, the fight against terrorism and the protection of external borders; external security, driven by the EU Common Security and Defence Policy; and economic and social security, investment and growth to strengthen the pillars of the Welfare State and to fight unemployment.

With the aim of preparing this summit, President Tusk has carried out a round of consultations in the capital cities of the participating States. On Monday, 12 September, he held a work meeting in Madrid with the acting President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy.

The Bratislava Summit, which will be held two days after the speech on the State of the Union made by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, is the first stage in a process which will culminate with the 60th anniversary of the signing of the so-called Treaties of Rome on 25 March 1957.
