Moncloa Palace, Madrid

"Good day,

I would like, as President of the Government and, above all, as a Spaniard, to congratulate all the members of the Armed Forces on such a special day for everyone.

I wish to congratulate you and thank you for the very important work you perform which I have been able to see firsthand in the remotest corners of the world.

All the people of Spain should acknowledge your sacrifice in guaranteeing security and liberty both within and beyond our borders.

We all admire your example in displaying such values as commitment, honour, fraternity and patriotism.

Also, we can all learn from your professionalism in tackling the challenges and threats we face as a society.

Armed Forces Day is a great opportunity to remind Spanish society that you are a fundamental pillar of our rule of law and an indisputable asset for the image and prestige of Spain beyond our borders.

We must thank you for the warmth, recognition and admiration which hundreds of thousands of people from all around the world show when talking of Spain.

Today, I would like to extend my gratitude to your families, who, with such selflessness take on the constraints of military life: changes of destination, of their homes, of their children's schools; the distances and constant worry when on missions in distant and complicated countries, and for their ceaseless disposition to serve Spain.

Today, I also wish to thank your wives, husbands, children and parents.

To you all, with my heartfelt recognition and deepest gratitude".
