Asia-Europe Meeting, Milan (Italy)

The President of the Government expressed his great satisfaction at the election of Spain as a member which, in his opinion, "shows the confidence felt by the international community in our country at this time".

The President of the Government recalled that Spain was a member of the United Nations Security Council for the two-year period 2003-2004 and considers that "it is time to revalidate the confidence shown in us at that time".

Mariano Rajoy recalled that the United Nations Security Council "is a global hub for decision-making on issues that affect international peace and security". In this regard, he stressed that when Spain takes on its responsibilities on 1 January, it will work towards "strengthening national and international security".

The President of the Government received the news of the successful Spanish candidature, with the backing of 132 countries, during the course of the 10th Asia-European Union Summit, being held in Milan (Italy).
