Madrid

Ladies and gentlemen, a very good day to you.

I wish to begin this brief speech by welcoming the Prime Minister of India, Narendra D. Modi, to Spain. This is the first visit by a Prime Minister of India since 1992, when Narasimha Rao visited here.

I hope that his stay in Spain, although brief due to his demands as Prime Minister, will be as pleasant as possible. We are very honoured at his presence here with us. I would like to say that being here today in Madrid is a reflection of our increasing and improving bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister is carrying out a broad programme of economic reforms for good governance and for a more developed and knowledge-based economy. India is our third-largest trading partner in Asia and I hope that this visit will serve to boost relations between our two countries in a decisive manner through the establishment of a roadmap. We are going to sign a document that will serve as a guide to the development of relations at a political, security, economic, scientific and technological level. And today we are going to tackle issues on the bilateral and international agenda.

I thank Prime Minister Modi for his presence here with us and reiterate the warm welcome from a friendly nation.
