Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, president of the Government of Spain

I am Pedro Sánchez and I was born in Madrid, in the Tetuán district, in 1972. I am married and have two daughters.

  • I studied my secondary education at the Ramiro de Maeztu High School in Madrid, and played in the Estudiantes basketball team until I was 21 years old. Today, I am a board member of its Foundation, which means I am still linked to one of my great passions: basketball. In 1995, I graduated in Economics and Business Studies from the Complutense University of Madrid.
  • I later completed my postgraduate studies: a Master's Degree in EU Economic Policy from the Free University of Brussels (1997-1998), a Master's Degree in Economic and Monetary Integration from the Ortega y Gasset University Institute (2201-2002) and a Public Leadership Programme from IESE (2004-2005).
  • In 2012, I obtained a PhD in Economics and Business from the Camilo José Cela University and worked there as a professor of Economic Structure and History of Economic Thought. In 2013 I published "The New European Economic Diplomacy", where I collected and developed some of the contents of my thesis.
  • Prior to my time as a university professor, I worked as a consultant in the European Parliament (1998) and as a member of the cabinet of the United Nations High Representative in Bosnia during the Kosovo War. (1999). During this period I was able to improve my fluency in French and English. After my return to Spain I worked as Director of International Relations at the OCU consumer organization (2000) and as Economic Advisor to the Federal Executive Committee of the PSOE, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (2000-2004). I have also worked as a consultant for foreign companies as a self-employed professional.
  • I joined the PSOE in 1993 and soon afterwards the Socialist Youth. I was a councillor in the Madrid City Council between 2004 and 2009 and a Member of Parliament for the Madrid constituency from 2009 until 2011, as well as from January 2013 until October 2016.
  • I feel very proud to be the first Secretary General of the PSOE elected by the party members.

From 2 June 2018, he presides over the Government of Spain.
