"If someone had said to us 40 years ago that the three State powers were going to be conveying this commitment, we would assuredly have felt comforted by that", said the Vice-President of the Government at the award ceremony for the 14th Observatory to Combat Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Prizes, handed over each year by the General Council of the Judiciary in recognition of work to foster equality and to combat gender-based violence.

Carmen Calvo said that male violence represents the "worst side of inequality between men and women", and thanked the award-winners for "going beyond civic commitment", with which she described the main problem facing democracy. "You are better than others, you are better than us, because you fight to guarantee the freedom and safety of women", she added.

The Vice-President of the Government handed over the Personal and Professional Career prize to the journalist Carme Chaparro for her committed defence of the rights of women and her public reporting of all forms of gender-based violence.

The Sub-committees of the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament, set up to reinforce the State Pact to Combat Gender-Based Violence received the award for the most outstanding work in eradicating male violence.

The "Soledad Cazorla, public prosecutor" Special Mention went to Judge María Tardón for her lengthy professional career defending the rights of women and combating gender-based violence.

The event was also attended by the Minister for Home Affairs, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, the President of the Supreme Court and of the General Council of the Judiciary (Spanish acronym: CGPJ), Carlos Lesmes, and the Speakers of the Lower House of Parliament, Ana Pastor, and of the Upper House, Pío García Escudero, among other public officials.
