The agreement, as a result of the ties of friendship and cooperation that unite our two countries, is based on the principle of reciprocity and on the need to protect common interests in the field of transfusion medicine in the two countries.

The aim is to promote blood donation, organise annual blood collections through mobile units in the territory of the Principality of Andorra, supply blood components for transfusions to the Ministry of Health of Andorra and promote the functioning of haemovigilance systems.

The agreement provides for collaboration on the organisation of campaigns to promote blood donation in the territory of the Principality of Andorra, as well as on public information activities regarding the need of the healthcare system to have blood components available, and hence, on the importance of donation.

Special attention will be paid to the principle of "voluntary, unremunerated donation", as contained in Spanish legislation and, in particular, on the provisions of Agreement No. 26 of the Council of Europe on "the exchange of therapeutic substances of human origin". The implementing centre should inform donors of the destination of the donations.

The agreement will enter into force on Thursday, the date of its signing, and will have a term of five years renewable for periods of equal duration.
