A total of 438 municipalities in Spain have joined this 18th EMW, with almost 24 million people involved. Behind Austria and its 547 municipalities involved, Spain holds a significant second place in terms of participation. Catalonia and Andalusia are the autonomous regions of Spain with the highest levels of involvement.

As usual since this European initiative was launched 16 years ago, Spain is yet again the country with the highest number of permanent city transformation measures in place - 2,418 last year alone.

These measures include the pedestrianisation of major areas, the creation or enlargement of low speed zones and cycle lanes, the implementation of bicycle or electric vehicle rental services, the creation of school routes, improved accessibility, etc.

Most participating local council authorities are planning a programme of activities this week to raise public awareness about sustainable mobility, including cycling events, workshops, photography contests, walks, breakfasts, information campaigns, etc.

Spain is also responsible for 17% of all the "Mobility Actions" (Best Practices) presented by companies, NGOs and associations, with a total of 105 mobility actions implemented by these organisations.

EMW 2018 will conclude on 22 September with Car Free Day, a European initiative involving a total of 175 municipalities that limits private road traffic and encourages people to use public transport or other alternative means for at least one day.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition invites all municipalities in Spain to take part in the European Sustainable Mobility Awards being organised by the European Commission. More information can be found at www.mobilityweek.eu
