Together with his counterparts from France, Belgium, Slovakia and Luxembourg, Rafael Catalá called a meeting prior to the JHA Council meeting which sought to boost the procedure for strengthened cooperation to try to finalise the work prior to the approval of the Regulation on the future Public Prosecutor once it was seen that there would not be unanimity among the 28 Member States.

Spain was originally one of the countries that proposed the suitability of setting up this institution which is called on to become a cornerstone of the legal system of the European Union. Rafael Catalá insisted on Tuesday to his colleagues that, just a few days after the events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, the backing of this initiative should reflect a commitment to Europe, to its future and to the growing institutionalisation of a common legal system.

Minister Catalá took the opportunity of his trip to Brussels to meet up with the Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Vera Jourova, with whom he exchanged impressions on the main issues debated at the EU Council meeting that affect the scope of competence of the Ministry of Justice.
