Average number of foreign citizens registered with Spanish Social Security system stands at 1,727,034 in September

The year-on-year rate of foreign workers rose by 4.93%, the highest increase in a month of September since 2007, which equates to 81,160 more workers than in 2015.

The highest figures for foreign workers contributing to the Social Security system correspond to Romania (309,132), Morocco (201,263), China (96,094), Italy (88,498) and Ecuador (69,744). These countries are followed by the United Kingdom (59,172), Colombia (54,077), Bulgaria (54,710), and Bolivia (51,900).

Autonomous regions

In month-on-month terms, the highest increases in foreign National Insurance contributors were posted in Castile-La Mancha (12.47%), Extremadura (10.94%), La Rioja (5.48%) and Navarre (2.87%). In year-on-year terms there were increases in foreign National Insurance contributors in all the autonomous regions except Extremadura (down 6.13%), La Rioja (down 5.82%) and Asturias (down 0.59%).

The figures posted for September show that 999,927 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, while the remaining 727,107 are from EU countries.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,444,000 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (189,786) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (191,064). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (278,035), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,787) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (212).

Of the total foreign citizens in the system in September, 950,993 are men and 776,041 are women.
