Spain, which has supported the peace efforts in Colombia both now and in previous processes, will continue to accompany the Republic of Colombia in the new phase to consolidate peace that begins today, both bilaterally through Spanish Cooperation and as a Member State of the EU and through its presence on the United Nations Security Council.

The government confirms with satisfaction that Spanish military personnel and members of the State security and law enforcement agencies will be deployed in the coming weeks in Colombia within the framework of the Special Political Mission of the United Nations entrusted with verifying the ceasefire, the cessation of hostilities and the laying down of weapons, thus ratifying the commitment made by the Government of Spain to peace in Colombia.

The Government of Spain urges the ELN to swiftly sign up to the drive towards peace in Colombia and trusts that when the 25th Ibero-American Summit is held in October in Cartagena de Indias, all of the Member States of the Ibero-American Community of Nations will be able to welcome being in a Colombia at peace, and ready to face up to new challenges to the benefit of all the people of Colombia.
