37 refugees arrive from Greece for relocation in Spain

37 refugees arrived in Spain at midday on Wednesday under the EU relocation programme set up to tackle the humanitarian consequences of the war in Syria. These asylum-seekers, who have travelled here from Greece, will be taken received in Guadalajara (2), Barcelona (4), Madrid (7), Vizcaya (6), Valencia (11) and Asturias (7). They are all of Syrian nationality, except one Iraqi, and comprise 13 men, 7 women and 17 children.

The 37 refugees arrived at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport to bring the total to 171 refugees who have been taken in by Spain to help tackle the humanitarian consequences of the war in Syria. Of this total, 40 have arrived from Italy, 121 from Greece and 10 from Turkey.

Another group of asylum-seekers are due to arrive on Wednesday afternoon to be relocated from Turkey.

The Spanish System for the Reception and Integration of applicants/beneficiaries of international protection offers its beneficiaries a stay at a reception centre of the Ministry of Employment and Social Security or of an NGO (subsidised by the government) at which they are guaranteed lodging, meals, legal advice, psychological assistance, social care and advice, accompaniment to education centres, public health and social centres, language learning and basic social skills, guidance and intermediation for vocational training and job reinsertion, cultural activities and economic aid.
